EU countries have been pushing the bloc’s regulators to coordinate on social media bans. An app is now ready, the Commission announced on Wednesday.

With concern growing across Europe about the dangers of allowing young people unrestricted access to social media platforms, the Commission has announced an app that will perform online age checks. The system, which has been developed as a prototype since last July, is now technically ready to be deployed as a standalone app or integrated into countries’ national age check apps.
Already seven countries have said they will implement the app: France, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus and Ireland. (...)
