EU-27 ministers met last week to discuss the European Commission’s
proposal for an EU regulation aimed at lowering the environmental impact
of products by making them easier to repair, reuse and recycle.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), tabled on 30 March, is a key part of the European Commission’s circular economy agenda, which seeks to lower the overall environmental impact of products and halve municipal waste in Europe by 2030.
The regulation introduces a labelling system using a “digital product passport” that will guarantee the traceability of materials used for the production of goods and ensure full transparency for consumers who will be able to make more informed choices.
“By using the huge leverage of our
internal market to make products more sustainable, we will make a big
step towards our climate and environmental goals,” said Environment
Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius who addressed EU-27 ministers at the
Competitiveness Council on Thursday (29 September). (...)
