It was almost inevitable that the brash, new-world attitude of US tech companies, with their “move fast and break things” mantra, and desire to bend society to their will, would come into conflict with the regulatory approach of Europe.
In Europe, the creative destruction inherent in entrepreneurial capitalism is viewed with a certain scepticism. Selected industries (such as taxi-cabs) are to be protected from the whims of the market for the good of society and workers.
In the United States, business culture
is more of a cleansing fire that engulfs the uncompetitive. If you are
caught in the flames, it’s your responsibility to save yourself (unless
you’re a bank or motor car company considered too big to fail, of course). (...)
