A salmonella outbreak, linked to multiple Kinder products made at a Ferrero factory in Belgium, continues to spread in Europe. All production has been suspended at the site, and products manufactured between June and the present date have been recalled.
On Tuesday (12 April), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released an assessment that outlines the rapid evolvement of the outbreak.
An unusually high proportion of children have been hospitalised, particularly under 10 years of age, with some presenting with severe clinical symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea.
“Symptoms of salmonellosis typically resolve themselves within a few
days. However, symptoms can be more severe, especially in young children
and those with weakened immune systems,” Lesley Larkin, surveillance
lead of gastrointestinal pathogens and food safety at the UK Health
Security Agency, said in the press release. (...)
