30 September 2022 – Think of the European Traffic Education Contest (ETEC) as the road safety “Olympics” for kids on bicycles. The event has been steadily supported by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) since its foundation in the 1980s.
With its ambition to protect most vulnerable road users, ETEC remains as relevant as ever: cyclists’ share of total road deaths in the EU is at 8%, a slowly rising trend. With the green transition and energy crisis, cycling is likely to continue roaring. With programmes such as ETEC, the FIA Region I and its Mobility Clubs want to help prepare this new generation of safe cyclists.
A total of 76 children from across Europe were in Zadar, Croatia last weekend to join ETEC. This year was the 35th
edition of the contest and was hosted by the Croatian Automobile Club
(HAK). All in all, 18 European countries were represented, including
Ukraine. Each sent a team of 4 children to compete on who was most
knowledgeable about road traffic rules and mastering bicycle skills.
Contestants are aged between 10 to 12 years old and have competed in
local, regional, and national levels before qualifying for the European
final. (...)
